|UNCW Golden In Win Over Bobcats|
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Freshman Casey Golden collected three hits and three runs batted in while Kelly Secrest retired all seven batter he faced as UNCW topped Ohio, 6-3, in the Buffalo Wild Wings Battle at the Beach on Saturday at Brooks Field. Liberty dealt UNCW a 14-6 setback in the second game of the afternoon.
The Seahawks improved to 2-3 with the win while Ohio dipped to 1-3. Liberty, meanwhile, improved to 3-3, also picking up an 8-5 win over Ohio earlier in the day.
Secrest (1-0) picked up the win in relief while Gerry Salisbury (0-1) was tagged with the loss out of the bullpen for the Bobcats.
Golden scored twice and swiped two bases in addition to his three hits at the plate in his first career start. Red-shirt freshman Gavin Stupienski scored twice and added a RBI triple for UNCW.
Jake Madsen and Taylor Emody each had two hits for OU.
Up Next: Ohio and Liberty open Sunday’s schedule with a 10 a.m. start followed by UNCW and OU, 40 minutes following the completion of the first game. UNCW and Liberty will close out the schedule following the middle game.
How it happened: Game 1 vs Liberty: The Flames scored four in the fifth to take a 6-0 lead against UNCW starter Mat Batts and later added six in the ninth to close out the scoring. Alex Close slammed two homers while Dalton Britt collected four hits. Close and Grauer each drove in three runs.
Game 2 vs Ohio: Tied at three in the top of the seventh, Secrest left the bases loaded for Ohio with a ground ball to second base to end the threat. In the bottom of the frame, Golden singled and stole second where with two outs, Ryan LaGrange’s ground ball to third was misplayed, allowing Golden to score the go-ahead run. Gaving Stupienski and Golden added an RBI triple and single, respectively, in the ninth to cap the scoring.
Inside the Box: Game 1 vs Liberty: The Flames advanced runners in 16-of-29 opportunities and plated seven two-out RBI’s … LU was 7-for-16 with two out and landed its leadoff hitter on base in 4-of-9 innings … Trey Lambert held UNCW’s lefthanded bats to one hit in 16 at bats and allowed one two-out hit on the afternoon.
Game 2 vs Ohio: UNCW pitchers held OU to 1-for-9 hitting in RBI opportunities … Led by Golden’s two, the Seahawks knocked in four two-out RBI’s … Jordan Ramsey allowed just two hits with runners on base in six innings.
Notes: Mat Batts fanned eight and walked none in six innings against Liberty, he has 17 strikeouts in 11 innings … He did allow nine hits and six runs, all earned, in taking the loss … Luis Renvill had three hits in the opening loss to Liberty … In the second game, UNCW had five freshmen in the starting lineup … Corey Dick swiped his first career base in three attempts … Ramsey struck out seven in the night cap … UNCW dropped to 3-7 all-time against Liberty, but improved to 11-6 vs. Ohio.
