WILMINGTON, North Carolina - Matt Campbell and Tyler Molinaro homered to back a career-high 10-strikeout effort from UNCW starter Tyler McSwain, as the Seahawks topped UNC Asheville, 8-1, at the Hughes Bros. Challenge on Friday at Brooks Field.
The Seahawks (3-6) halted a five-game losing skid with the win as they set a season-high with eight runs scored. UNCA, who dropped a 10-1 decision earlier in the day to NC State, fell to 6-5 with its third consecutive defeat.
McSwain (1-2) tossed seven shutout innings for the second time this season and escaped jams in most of those innings. UNCA went 1-for-11 with runners on base and finished 0-for-11 in RBI opportunities.
Ryan Dull (2-1) was the tough luck loser, allowing four runs, two earned, over seven innings.
UNCW plated the first three runs of the game with a RBI single by Corey Dick in the fourth and Molinaro connected on a two-run blast in the fifth for a 3-0 lead.
The Bulldogs scratched out a run in the eighth as three walks and an error against the UNCW bullpen allowed pinch hitter Eli Miller to score and narrow the deficit to 3-1. UNCA placed its leadoff hitter on base five times, but stranded 11 runners on base.
Campbell answered that run with a leadoff homer to left to make it 4-1. The Seahawks would tack on four unearned runs to make the final 8-1. Farber's double and a RBI single from Jake Koenig highlighted the outburst.
Due to anticipated bad weather on Saturday, the schedule has been adjusted. UNCA and NC State will begin at 10:30 a.m. followed by the NC State-UNCW game, 45 minutes following the conclusion of the first game.
