Pope Lifts Seahawks Over Charleston, 3-2

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Thomas Pope's two-out, single up the middle plated the game-winning run and rallied UNCW to a 3-2 win over the College of Charleston in a non-conference matchup on Thursday at Brooks Field.
The Seahawks improved to 30-24 with their fourth straight win while the Cougars fell to 40-15 on the season.
Trailing 2-1 in the ninth, UNCW loaded the bases in the ninth against losing pitcher Owen Brittle (0-1) and tied the game on a ground ball double play by senior Matt Holt. With two out and a 0-1 count, Pope lined a single up the middle into center field to score pinch runner Cameron Cockman with the winning run.
CofC broke a one-all dead lock in the top of the ninth on Jamie Holler's third homer of the season to open the inning against UNCW senior reliever Seth Frankoff.
Frankoff picked up the win to improve to 5-1 after striking out four in three innings of relief.
UNCW junior starter Cameron Roth left with the game tied after six innings. Roth limited the Cougars to a run on three hits and a pair of walks. Roth finished with three strikeouts and lowered his earned run average to 3.15.
Freshman Matt Pegler matched Roth for CofC, holding the Seahawks to a run, a leadoff homer to Mike Rooney in the first inning, on six hits and a walk over seven innings.
Trailing 1-0 in the fifth with two out, CofC used a walk by Greg Blake, who stole second and would score on Kolby Epley's RBI single off Roth. It was the Cougars first hit of the game.
Rooney, junior Cody Stanley and Pope all finished with two hits as UNCW out hit the Cougars, 10-5.
Notes: Mike Rooney tied the school's career assist record of 546 set by Mitch Wells (1984-87) ... Robbie Monday's career-high eight-game hitting streak was was extended to nine with a lead-off single in the ninth ... Hunter Ridge ran his to eight with a double ... Frankoff has struck out 15 and allowed just three hits over his last 10 innings of work ... The win was UNCW's first of the season when trailing after eight innings.
