Diamond Hawks Take Opener, 6-3

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Mike Rooney collected three hits and Robbie Monday belted a two-run homer as UNC Wilmington topped host Jacksonville, 6-3, in the college baseball season opener for both teams Friday at Sessions Stadium.
Monday put the Seahawks (1-0) in front, 2-0, with a two-run homer to right center off losing pitcher Glenn Witkowski (0-1) in the top of the second.
Jamaal Hawkins capped a three-run fourth for the Dolphins (0-1) when his two-out RBI single through the left side gave JU a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the inning. Chuck Opachich and Alex Swenson opened the scoring with RBI singles earlier in the inning.
UNCW answered the Dolphins with two runs in the top of the fifth. Evans plated a run with a RBI ground out and senior Matt Holt forced in a run with a bases loaded walk late in the inning.
The Seahawks pushed their lead to 6-3 entering the bottom of the ninth. Rooney plated a run in the eighth with two-out single and Holt forced in another run with a bases loaded walk in the ninth.
The second game of the series is slated for a 1 p.m. start on Saturday.
Notes: Frankoff made his 31st career start, most of any current pitcher on the staff ... Rooney extended his hitting streak to 10 games, dating back to 2009 ... UNCW improved to 6-13 in season openers during Head Coach Mark Scalf's 19 seasons ... Scalf picked up his 588th win as he bears down on the 600 mark ... UNCW's bullpen combined for 5 1/3 innings, four hits, no runs, a walk and five strikeouts ... UNCW's last season opening road win was in 1978, 8-4, at Duke ... Jesse Haney posted his second career save and first since Apr. 22, 2007 against Towson.
