|Baseball Preview: The Citadel|
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The Seahawks will head out of town and out of conference play this weekend when they play a split series with The Citadel beginning on Thursday with a 7 p.m. start at Riley Park in Charleston, S.C.
UNCW and the Bulldogs both have off-weekends from league play and will resume a series last contested in 2008. The series continues on Friday at 5 p.m. and will conclude in Wilmington on Sunday with a 2 p.m. start. Saturday is an off day with both schools holding commencement ceremonies. Sunday will be Senior Day for the Seahawks with 12 seniors being recognized prior to the game. That finale will also be UNCW’s Molly Maid Pink Game, with game-worn pink jerseys being auctioned off during the game. Monies from the auction will go to the Pretty in Pink Foundation.
The Seahawks improved to 8-8 in the Colonial Athletic Association last weekend by winning two-of-three against visiting College of Charleston. UNCW blanked the Cougars, 5-0, in the opener and clipped CofC in game two, 3-2. The Cougars averted a sweep with a 7-4 win in the finale.
Senior starter Mat Batts was named CAA Pitcher-of-the-Week for the fourth time this season following seven innings of shutout baseball. Batts scattered six hits and two walks while striking out nine. He moved into fifth in the league with a 2.54 ERA and leads the circuit with 92 strikeouts.
Sophomore outfielder Joe Bertone was named Player-of-the-Week after hitting .750 and reaching base safely in 8-of-10 plate appearances. He slugged 1.750 on the strength of two doubles and a pair of home runs.
Also returning to former was junior rigthhander Jordan Ramsey with six strong innings in the middle game. Ramsey allowed two runs on five hits, but fanned five and didn’t walk a batter.
Following this weekend’s series, the Seahawks close out non-conference season with a game at Campbell on Tuesday before heading to Boston for a three-game series beginning on Thursday against Northeastern.
