|UNCW Falls On Saturday To UD, 7-3|
NEWARK, Delaware – Doug Trimble’s three hits and Alex Mottle’s two doubles fueled Delaware’s 14 –hit attack as the Blue Hens evened their Colonial Athletic Association series with UNCW following a 7-3 win on Saturday at Bob Hannah Stadium.
The Blue Hens improved to 19-20 overall and 6-7 in the CAA with the home win. UNCW dropped back to .500 with the loss at 21-21 and 6-6 in the circuit.
UD starter Chad Martin (5-3) earned the win despite a bout with wildness. The freshman rigthhander walked seven and scattered six hits while allowing just one run over 5.1 innings.
Sophomore Ryan Foster took the loss for UNCW to fall to 1-2. Foster was tagged for five runs, four earned, on 10 hits in four-plus innings.
EJ Stotltzfus, Norm Donkin and Zach Lopes each added two hits for the Blue Hens, who took over the game with three runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth for a 6-1 lead. Mottle finished with two runs batted in.
Up next: The Seahawks and Blue Hens will play for the series win on Sunday with first-pitch slated for 1 p.m.
How it happened: With two out and a man on second, Foster surrendered the first of four consecutive two-out hits when Ty Warrington singled in Ryan Hartley. Joe Giacchino , Stotlzfus and Donkin followed with singles for a 4-1 lead.
Inside the box score: UNCW again struggled leading off innings with just two hitters reaching safely (Terence Connelly both times with walks in the second and fourth) … The Seahawks did go 7-for-13 with two out … The Blue Hens also exceled with two out (8-for-15) but struggled leading off innings (1-for-8).
Notes: UNCW has won just two Saturday games this season … Casey Golden’s single in the fourth inning extended his on base streak to 16 games … Combined 25 base runners left on base tied for second most in a game between UNCW and an opponent.
