DURHAM, North Carolina – Ryan LaGrange had three hits and knocked in two runs as UNCW tossed its second straight shutout with a 9-0 white-washing of host North Carolina Central on Wednesday at the Durham Athletic Park.
The Seahawks evened their record at 16-16 with the non-conference road win while the Eagles dropped to 14-19-1.
Evan Phillips (2-2) earned the win in relief, striking out five and walking two in two innings of work. Five Seahawk pitchers combined on the shutout and allowed just three hits. Starter Blaze Tart scattered two hits and walked three in four innings, his longest outing of the season.
NCCU starter Eric Kimber (2-1) took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits in three innings of work.
UNCW totaled nine extra base hits on the night, including eight doubles, one short of tying the program’s single game record of nine. Joining LaGrange with multi-hit games were Corey Dick and Robbie Thorburn, each with two. Dick knocked in two runs while Thorburn connected on his first collegiate homer, a solo shot in a two-run third.
NCCU managed just three hits on the game with only one coming in the final five innings.
Next up: The Seahawks return to Brooks Field for a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series against Hofstra. The series opens with a 6 p.m. start on Friday.
How it happened: The Seahawks score twice in the second, third and fourth innings for a 6-0 lead. Joe Bertone opened the scoring with a two-run double in the second. Luke Dunlap had a sacrifice fly in the third and Thorburn followed with his homer. In the fourth, Dick doubled in two runs.
