Time of game: 3:45
The Seahawks (13-14) completed a sweep of Coastal Carolina (12-18) for the first time since 2008 after also topping the Chanticleers, 7-3, in mid-March.
William Prince (1-0) earned the win in relief for UNCW, striking out the only batter he faced after coming on in the ninth.
Reliever Tyler Poole (0-2) took the loss for CCU, allowing both runs in the bottom of the inning.
How it happened: Pinch hitter Luis Renvill doubled to open the ninth off Poole and advanced to third when Abshire line a single up the middle. Casey Golden followed with a fielder’s choice to third that CCU failed to get an out on the play. Connelly battled reliever Andrew Beckwith to a 2-2 count before lining a single into left scoring Renvill and Abshire.
Inside the box score: Both teams excelled in getting its leadoff hitter on safely with CCU going 4-for-9 and UNCW 5-for-9 … Coastal Carolina, which stranded 16 runners on base, was just 1-for-15 in RBI situations … CCU did have six hits with two outs on the evening, including a RBI single from Connor Owings in the top of the ninth for a 4-3 lead … The UNCW bullpen combined to allow just one run over the final six innings.
Notes: UNCW moved back to within a game of .500 with the home win and improved to 10-9 at home … Justin Carroll had his first two collegiate hits for UNCW, a pair of singles … Ryan LaGrange pushed his on-base streak to 19 games … Ricky Holden tossed two more shutout innings of relief … Kelly Secrest has allowed just one inherited base runner to score this season out of 14 inherited … It was UNCW’s third walk-off win and the fourth they’ve won in the ninth inning (Indiana State, West Virginia, Coastal Carolina, Baylor (top 9)).
Up next: The Seahawks return to conference play on Friday with a 7 p.m. start at William & Mary, the nation’s top offensive team in several categories.
