WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW plays the second of two midweek tilts this evening when it hosts top-ranked UNC Chapel Hill. Both teams are playing well with the Seahawks winning 16 of their last 19 and the Tar Heels sporting a 25-2 record.
The Seahawks opened the week with an key non-conference win over visiting College of Charleston on Tuesday as Evan Phillips allowed one run on four hits over six innings in a 7-2 win.
Phillips, who improved to 2-0 on the season, walked four and struck out five in going a career-long six-plus innings.
UNCW plated two in the fourth and two more in the sixth to establish a 4-0 lead after six innings.
The Tar Heels won their ACC weekend series with Clemson, but dropped the series finale in 11 innings, 5-4.
UNC is the top-ranked program in both the USAToday/Coaches and the NCBWA polls.
The Tar Heels own the top-scoring offense in the nation, averaging 8.9 runs per game while the pitching staff is second nationally with a 1.70 ERA.
Skye Bolt heads up the offense with a .402 batting average and is second with a .523 on base average.
Colin Moran is hitting .374 with team-leading totals of six home runs and 35 RBI.
Trent Thornton is 6-0 and owns an ERA of 0.68 to lead the pitching staff.
On the mound, CofC boasts a 3.62 ERA, led by Matt Pegler’s 2.62.
Ridge and Farber pace the Seahawks with 28 and 27 RBI, respectively while Luke Dunlap is hitting .337 with seven doubles.
Jordan Ramsey leads the staff with a 1.46 ERA, that also ranks him among the conference leaders.
Mat Batts was named CAA Co-Pitcher-of-the-Week after tossing his second straight complete game shutout against Old Dominion.
