MT. PLEASANT, South Carolina - College of Charleston plated three runs in the ninth with the last coming on a bases-loaded hit batter to rally past UNCW, 6-5, in college baseball action on Tuesday at Patriots Point.

The Cougars, who will join the Colonial Athletic Association in 2013-14, improved to 7-5 while the Seahawks dropped to 6-6.

Corey Dick led the Seahawks with three hits, including his second homer of the season. For CofC, Gunnar Heidt, Ryan Welke, Bradley Goodson and Cody Martin had two hits apiece as CofC out hit the Seahawks, 12-11.

Kelly Secrest (1-1) was tagged with the loss while Cougar reliever Ryan West (4.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R/1 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO) evened his record at 1-1 with the win in relief. Secrest allowed four runs, three earned, in three innings out of the pen.

Up Next: The Seahawks host undefeated VCU (9-0) for a three-game series beginning on Friday at 4 p.m.

How it happened: Carrying a 5-3 lead into the ninth, Secrest retired the leadoff batter, but surrendered a single to Heidt to start the rally. Secrest then walked Carl Wise and Welke followed with a RBI single to left. Brandon Murray, who was hitless in four at bats, then doubled to centerfield to tie the game and put runners at second and third. Reliever Ricky Holden entered the game for Secrest and issued an intentional walk to load the bases. Holden then hit Martin to force in the winning run.

Starts on the mound: Neither starter figured in the decision, but Blaze Tart (UNCW) and Blake Ross (CofC) turned in solid starts. Tart went a season-long 5 1/3 innings, allowed two runs on eight hits, walked one and struck out four. Ross, who was making his first collegiate start, tossed four shutout innings while scattering three hits and striking out three.

Notes: For Dick, it was his first three-hit game of the season ... Michael Bass extended his hitting streak to eight games and on-base streak to 14 games, dating back to 2012 ... For UNCW, it was the second time this season they lost in the city of Charleston on a hit batter with the bases loaded, both by Holden (Feb. 20, at Charleston Southern) ... Teams combined for 24 runners left on base, including 13 by UNCW ... Defensively, UNCW had just five assists on the afternoon ... Tart allowed just one hit in seven at bats with two out.

Schedule Note: UNCW's series at James Madison has had time changes. The series now begins on Mar. 15, with a 6:30 p.m. start and the same for the middle game. The final game is still slated for 2 p.m.
