WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW volleyball team opened the spring portion of their schedule with a strong showing in an exhibition tournament at College of Charleston last Sunday.

The Seahawks opened the event with 2-0 sweeps of The Citadel and North Florida in pool play before defeating fellow Colonial Athletic Association member and host College of Charleston in a single-set crossover match. In the Championship Bracket, the Seahawks defeated Coastal Carolina, 2-1, in the semifinals, but fell in the championship match to the Cougars, 2-0.

Rising junior Meredith Peacock led UNCW with 23 kills and a .294 hitting percentage. Rising seniors Morgan Kline and Leah Gagliardi chipped in 17 kills apiece while rising junior Lindsay Hartmann posted a 4.2 digs per set average.

“This was a great first tournament for our team and I’m very pleased with the balanced contributions from every player,” said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek. “It was clear to our staff and players what we need to work on moving forward with our spring training and I know the team will continue to work hard daily.”

The College of Charleston Tournament is one of four spring tournaments for UNCW. The Seahawks will take part in events at NC State (March 22) and UNC Chapel Hill (April 12) before returning home to host their annual sand tournament at Ft. Fisher in nearby Carolina Beach.
