At Hilton Garden Inn Mayfaire UNCW Volleyball Classic (Wilmington, N.C.)
UNCW posted a 1-2 finish to the FIU Classic, defeating Houston Baptist, 3-1, before falling to Alabama, 3-2, and host FIU, 3-1 … The matches marked the first meeting between UNCW and all three of its opponents at the FIU Classic … Senior Christi Laite earned All-Tournament honors for the second consecutive weekend as she averaged 4.08 kills per set … Laite also fashioned a .389 hitting percentage during the tournament as she finished with 53 kills and just 11 errors in 108 total attempts … Her 53 kills moved Laite into sole possession of eighth place on the program’s all-time kills chart (901) … Senior Haley Collins also made a move up the program’s career digs list as she took over sole possession of third place on the squad’s all-time digs chart (1,244) … UNCW opens the home portion of its 2013 schedule this weekend as it entertains Mercer, North Carolina A&T, UNC Asheville and Western Carolina in the Hilton Garden Inn Mayfaire UNCW Volleyball Classic.

North Carolina A&T starts the week with a 1-6 overall record following a 1-2 result to the Ashford Suites Aggie-Spartan Invitational at home last weekend … The Aggies are led offensively by Aleena McDaniel and her 2.62 kills per set average while Brooke Stamnes is just off the pace of McDaniel with a 2.60 spikes per set clip … McDaniel also plays a key role in the team’s defensive efforts, averaging 2.38 digs per set, second to Ashley Johnson and her 2.92 digs per frame rate … The Seahawks and Aggies are meeting for the 29th time in series history … The Seahawks hold a 23-5 edge in the series, having won each of the past six meetings between the two sides.
Mercer heads into the Hilton Garden Inn Mayfaire UNCW Volleyball Classic with a 1-6 overall record after falling in all three of its matches in the Auburn Invitational last weekend … Molly Locke leads the Bears attack with a 3.04 kills per set average while Carly Iannarino has dished out 220 of the team’s 248 assists thus far … Defensively, Emily Rochefort paces the squad with 5.32 digs per frame and four players have recorded double-digit blocks thus far … Sunday’s matchup will serve as the 10 meeting between the two programs … The two sides last met during the 2011 season, a neutral-site match that saw the Seahawks post a 3-0 victory.
UNC Asheville holds a 5-3 overall record following a 1-3 finish to the Comfort Inn and Suites Invitational at Chattanooga, Tenn., last weekend … Sophomore Christine Lakatos serves as the focal point of the Bulldogs attack, averaging a team-best 3.29 kills per set … Senior Rachel Wells leads the team with a 5.06 digs per set clip while Senior Anna Moore and senior Meredith Foster have both recorded more than 30 total blocks through eight matches … Friday’s match marks the 25th meeting between the two programs … UNCW trails in the all-time series, 8-16, but has won three of the last five matchups, including a 3-1 victory in their most recent meeting on Aug, 29, 2009 at the NCCU Tournament.
Western Carolina begins the week with a 6-1 overall record after claiming the title at the Memphis Invitational last weekend … The Catamounts will face Gardner-Webb in a midweek contest Tuesday before making their way East to Wilmington … Junior Caitlin Piechota paces a potent WCU attack that has averaged 12.56 kills per set with 77 total kills while sophomore Cristina Nazario has already dished out more than 500 assists … Senior Morgan Cochran, named MVP of the Memphis Invitational last weekend, currently leads the team with a 6.32 digs per frame average … Saturday’s contest represents the 17th all-time meeting between the two state foes … They last met on the court during the 2009 season, a 3-2 UNCW victory in the Coastal Carolina Tournament.
