MIAMI – Senior Christi Laite tallied 15 kills and junior Morgan Kline chipped in 11 to lead UNCW to a 3-1 (15-25, 25-16, 25-15, 25-23) victory over Houston Baptist in collegiate volleyball action Friday in the FIU Classic at U.S. Century Bank Arena.

The Seahawks remained undefeated on the season as they improved to 4-0 while the Huskies slipped to 4-3. UNCW returns to action in the FIU Classic Saturday as it faces Alabama (Noon) and host FIU (6 p.m.) to close out its tournament appearance.

“I have to give our team a lot of credit for their bounce-back mentality after dropping the first set and then also holding their composure  in the fourth set when the score was tight,” said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek. “We saw action from a lot of players but Christi and Morgan were consistent with finding ways to get kills and our defense was relentless.”

Laite and Kline combined to record 26 of the Seahawks’ 48 kills for the match as they were the only two UNCW players to record double-digit kills. Sophomore Meredith Peacock chipped in eight spikes and added a career-high 11 total blocks while senior Haley Collins tallied a match-best 20 digs to move into sole possession of third place on the program’s career digs chart (1,230). Sophomore Victoria Phillips dished out 30 assists and added nine digs to finish just shy of recording her second double-double of the season.

Freshman Jessica Wooten notched 16 kills and senior Caiti Wenger added 10 for HBU. Kayla Armer handed out a match-best 39 assists while Haley Hoffman tallied 13 digs and bEth Shecterle

After falling in the first set, 25-15, the Seahawks rallied for a 25-16 triumph in the second set, racing out to an early 5-1 advantage before using a 17-7 run later in the frame to pull away from the Huskies.

UNCW carried its momentum into the third set, using a 15-6 spurt midway through the frame to break a 5-all deadlock and cruise to a 25-15 triumph.

In a back-and-forth fourth set that featured a total of 10 ties and seven lead changes, the Seahawks trailed 23-22 when a kill and solo block by Meredith Peacock and a Huskies attack error gave UNCW a 25-23 decision and the match.
