WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW volleyball team was recognized for its work in the classroom as it was named a Team Academic Award recipient for the 2012-13 season by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).
The Seahawks were the only current Colonial Athletic Association member to earn the award, which honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the previous school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade point average. A total of 623 programs were recognized, including 131 Division I programs.
“This is a deserving award to a group of players that put forth a lot of time towards high academic achievement,” said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek. “Commitment in the classroom is a focal point in our program and to be recognized amongst the top programs in the country is a great honor.”
The honor marked the fourth time in the past eight seasons that the Seahawks have been honored by the AVCA for their commitment to academics. The squad earned the award for three consecutive seasons between 2005-08.
