Collins Claims CAA Defensive Honor

WILMINGTON, North Carolina - Sophomore defensive specialist Haley Collins has been named the Colonial Athletic Association's volleyball Defensive Player-of-the-Week, league officials announced on Monday.
Collins is the third Seahawk to win a weekly award from the CAA this season. Freshman McKenzie Keightley was named CAA Rookie-of-the-Week on Sept. 6 and sophomore Courtney Porter garnered league Defensive Player-of-the-Week accolades on Oct.10.
"Haley has been a consistent force for our team all season, but in the last few weeks she has been working hard to increase her defensive touches, be even more dependable in serve receive and perform well in pressure situations," said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek. "She is one of our best communicators on the court and the entire program is happy for Haley to receive this recognition for her efforts."
Collins averaged 4.88 digs per set in leading the Seahawks to a split of their league road matches against VCU and William & Mary last weekend. She began the trip with 12 digs and a season-high five assists in a 3-1 setback to the Rams before posting 27 digs and one assist in a 3-1 victory over the Tribe.
The win over W&M gave UNCW its first sweep of the season series against W&M in program history. The 27 digs against the Tribe also represented the eighth time this season at the Atlanta, Ga., product has recorded 20 or more digs in a match.
UNCW (12-17; 5-7 CAA) wraps up the regular season this weekend with home matches against Hofstra (Nov. 11) and Northeastern (Nov. 13) at Hanover Hall.
