WILMINGTON, North Carolina - UNCW sophomore middle blocker Courtney Porter has been named the Colonial Athletic Association's Defensive Player-of-the-Week, league officials announced Monday.
"Courtney had a tremendous weekend and did a great job communicating and working hard at the net," said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek. "Blocking is something we work on continuously in practice and Courtney has always shown a strong desire to be a better blocker for this team. I'm happy for Courtney to be recognized for her stellar performance."
A native of Hickory, N.C., Porter averaged 1.56 blocks per set in helping the Seahawks earn a split of its league matches at Northeastern (L 3-1) and Hofstra (W 3-2) last weekend. She also chipped in 13 kills (1.44 kps) and posted a .179 hitting percentage.
Porter opened the weekend with six total blocks and seven kills in the Seahawks setback to the Huskies on Friday before closing out the weekend with a career-best eight total rejections and six spikes in the team's come-from-behind triumph over the Pride on Sunday.
The Seahawks (8-13; 2-3 CAA) return to action Tuesday as they complete the non-conference portion of their 2011 schedule with a 6 p.m. match at The Citadel.
