WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW volleyball team was one of 15 squads that traveled to Virginia Beach, Va. this past weekend to compete in the TVA Endless Summer College Invitational, where they would be matched up against both familiar and unfamiliar faces.

For its first match of the day, UNCW was paired against reigning Atlantic Sun Champions ETSU. The Buccaneers showcased their talent as they took both games from the Seahawks to win 2-0 (25-14, 25-20).

UNCW then faced state rival Duke and dropped the first game, 25-22. The Seahawks then rallied behind rising senior Christi Laite’s eight kills to win the second game, 26-24, and draw the match, 1-1.

After a short break, UNCW met Atlantic Coast Conference foe Virginia. The Cavaliers came out fast and cruised past the Seahawks with a 2-0 victory (25-20, 25-17). The Seahawks were led offensively by Laite and rising senior Courtney Porter as both tallied five kills in the match while Porter turned in a .571 hitting percentage.

In the last match of the day, UNCW was pitted against another Tar Heel State rival, Wake Forest. The Seahawks came out swinging and beat the Demon Deacons, 2-0 (26-24, 25-19), for their only victory of the day. UNCW was elevated by performances from rising junior Leah Gagliardi with five kills on 10 total swings and Laite, who chipped in 11 kills of her own.

At day’s end, Laite stood atop the team statistical rankings with 28 kills and a .382 attack clip.  Rising sophomore Meredith Peacock added 11 spikes and Porter pitched in nine.

The Seahawks will finish up their spring schedule April 14 as they host Campbell, UNCG and Winthrop in UNCW’s first ever UNCW Sandblast Tournament at Fort Fisher on nearby Kure Beach.
