UNCW opened the 2013 season by capturing the Kristen Dickmann Invitational at the United States Naval Academy last weekend … The Seahawks defeated host Navy (3-1), Elon (3-0) and UIC (3-1) to claim its second in-season tournament under fifth year head coach Amy Bambenek … The 3-0 start marked just the seventh time since the 1982 season and the first time since the 2001 campaign that the Seahawks have begun a season at 3-0 … UNCW combined to record a .228 attack percentage during the event while limiting the opposition to a combined .109 hitting percentage … Senior Christi Laite was named MVP of the event … Laite averaged 4.00 kills per set and posted a .289 hitting percentage during the tournament … She also pitched in 11 total blocks (1.00) and 15 digs (1.36) … Laite matched her career-high with 22 kills in the tournament finale against the Flames as she moved into sole possession of 10th place on the program’s career kills chart (848) … Senior Courtney Porter and sophomore Meredith Peacock joined Laite on the All-Tournament Team … Peacock tallied 17 total blocks and Porter pitched in 15 as the Seahawks combined to tally 36 total blocks during the tournament.

Alabama (2-1)

Alabama kicked off its 2013 campaign with a 2-1 mark in the Black Knights Invitational, defeating Seton Hall and host Army by 3-1 margins and falling to tournament champion Washington State in straight sets …  Junior Katherine White  and freshman Krystal Rivers were both named to the All-Tournament Team at the event as Rivers led the squad in both kills per set (3.27) and hitting percentage (.475) while White averaged 2.09 kills and a .333 hitting percentage … Saturday’s matchup marks the first meeting between the two programs.

FIU (1-2)

Host FIU opened the 2013 season with a 1-2 finish to the Gamecock Invitational last weekend … The Panthers dropped a hard-fought, five-set loss to High Point and fell to host South Carolina, 3-0, before sweeping South Carolina State in straight sets … Junior Ksenia Sukhareva was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Gamecock Invitational after averaging 3.36 kills per set on the strength of a .243 hitting percentage … Saturday’s match marks the first meeting between the two programs.   

Houston Baptist (2-1)

HBU begins the week with a 2-1 record as it defeated Louisiana and Texas-Pan American and fell to Nebraska-Omaha during action in the HPU Tournament last weekend … Senior Caiti Wenger was named Tournament MVP as she averaged 2.42 kills per set and turned in a .424 hitting percentage … Junior Madeline Gaffney and freshman Kayla Armer joined Wenger on the All-Tournament Team … Friday’s meeting will serve as the first matchup with the two programs.
