|Seahawks Sweep CAA Women's Tennis Honors|
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW junior Alyssa Ritchie has been selected the Colonial Athletic Association’s Women’s Tennis Singles Player-of-the-Week and the tandem of Kelly Cameron and Miller Hales has earned Doubles Team-of-the-Week to give the Seahawks a sweep of the league’s weekly honors.
The Seahawks, 14-3, have reeled off nine consecutive victories and have not lost since March 1. Coach Evan Clark’s red-hot team has already clinched the top-seed at the upcoming CAA Women’s Tennis Championships April 17-20 in Williamsburg, Va.
Ritchie, from Franklin, Ohio, went 2-0 at No. 4 singles as UNCW recorded key conference wins over the College of Charleston (5-2) and James Madison (6-1). The junior outlasted CofC’s Samantha Maddox, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, before rolling past JMU’s Emily Bradshaw, 6-0, 6-0. Ritchie has won nine straight matches and owns a 14-2 mark this spring.
“This award is well-deserved for Alyssa,” said Clark. “We are proud of all her hard work for this program and her consistency for our program from week to week.”
Cameron (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) and Hales (Wilmington, N.C.) notched a pair of wins at No. 3 doubles against the Cougars and Dukes. The tandem posted an impressive 8-3 triumph against the Charleston’s Samantha Maddox and Jamie Harrell before edging JMU’s Rachel Nelson and Cara Wirth, 8-6. Cameron and Hales are unbeaten this spring with a 10-0 mark at No. 3 doubles.
“We’re extremely proud of Miller and Kelly and their consistency in their doubles play and feel they are very deserving of this award,” added Clark. “They continue to get better and their record speaks for itself.”
The Seahawks wrap up the regular season on Saturday, April 12, with a Noon match at Charleston Southern.
