WILMINGTON, North Carolina - The UNCW women's tennis celebrated the first day of spring in style Tuesday by breezing past Cornell, 7-0, in a non-conference match at the UNCW Tennis Complex.

        Playing a match that was moved back one day due to a surprise Monday thunderstorm, Coach Jenny Garrity's team won its second straight and raised its record to 8-5 by beating the Big Red for the second year in a row. Cornell fell to 7-3 on the season.

        "Everyone came out to win today and didn't let Cornell get into the match," said senior Christina Lee. "We had the rain delay yesterday, so it was important to come out focused and stay on top of them. We just wanted to make sure we were focused and that was a big factor for us."

        The teams played singles first and junior Christina Riley got the Seahawks started off on the right foot with an easy 6-0, 6-2 decision over Cornell's Sara Perelman at the No. 6 position. Sophomore Olga Blank then downed Christine Ordway, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles for a 2-0 advantage.

        Sophomore Kelly Cameron of UNCW ripped Gabby Sullivan, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 5 singles before freshman Alyssa Ritchie clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-3 handling of Lauren Frazier at No. 4 singles. In other matches, Lee had no trouble with Sarah O'Neil at the top of the lineup, winning 6-1, 6-4, and sophomore Angie Sekely completed the sweep with a 2-6, 7-6 (5), 1-0 (10-7) come-from-behind win over Ryann Young at No. 3 singles.

        UNCW made it a clean sweep in doubles as well. The No. 2 pairing of Ritchie and rookie Miller Hales blanked Young and Ordway, 8-0, for the first off the court and the No. 1 team of Cameron and Blank clinched the doubles point by trimming Frazier and O'Neil, 9-7.

        The Seahawks travel to Charlotte this weekend for a pair of matches against state rivals UNC Charlotte and Appalachian State. UNCW plays UNCC on Saturday at 11 a.m. and then faces ASU on Sunday at Noon.
