|Seahawks Rip UNCG In Women's Tennis|
GREENSBORO, North Carolina – The UNCW women’s tennis team won for the third time in four outings late Sunday with a convincing 6-1 victory over UNC Greensboro at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.
The Seahawks, 3-1, will travel down the road Monday to take on future CAA rival Elon at 2:30 p.m. UNCG now stands 1-4 early in the spring season.
“What a solid performance from our entire team today,” said Evan Clark, UNCW’s second-year head coach. “I’m really pleased with the way we competed from start to finish. We’re getting better each match and we’re very excited for the opportunity to take on a very good Elon team tomorrow.”
In Sunday’s match, which started at 5:30 p.m., the Seahawks secured the doubles point with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles for a quick 1-0 edge. The No. 2 tandem of Angie Sekely and Alyssa Ritchie got things going with an 8-1 triumph over Jamie Grinberg and Amy Ellis and Kelly Cameron and Miller Hales notched the point by dispatching Stephanie Falcon and Asha Iyengar, 8-4.
Freshman Alix Theodossiou increased the lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 manhandling of Iyengar at No. 6 singles and Ritchie, playing at No. 3, pushed the margin to 3-0 by cruising past UNCG’s Jamie Grinberg, 6-3, 6-2.
Angie Sekely, playing at the top of the lineup, then clinched the match with an easy 6-1, 6-3 triumph against Falcon.
The Seahawks tacked on two more singles victories at No. 2 (Olga Blank) and No. 5 (Christine Kharkevich) to wrap up a successful day.
