WILMINGTON, North Carolina - The UNCW women's tennis team won the doubles point and added three singles victories to blank state foe Campbell, 4-0, in its home debut Saturday at the UNCW courts.

The Seahawks increased their record to 3-1 on the season with their second straight triumph and opened a four-match homestand on a successful note. The Camels dipped to 1-5 after concluding five road matches in a row.

"I'm proud of the way our team embraced the day, the match and the conditions," said first-year UNCW head coach Evan Clark. "We did what we needed to do in the spots where we needed to do it and were successful. We will continue to get better and more comfortable each match.

"We will have a heightened level of focus this week in practice to prepare for a very tough Elon squad. We have a lot of respect for the Elon team, coaches and program. We need to be ready to go for our match this week."

The Seahawks jumped out to a quick start by blanking the Camels at No. 3 and No. 2 doubles to secure the early point. Sophomore Alyssa Ritchie and freshman Christine Kharkevich blanked Kirsten Renz and Lauren Vaughn, 8-0, at No. 3 and junior Kelly Cameron and sophomore Miller Hales zapped Ana Maria Ortiz and Lourdes Ros by the same score to get the Seahawks rolling.

With cool, rainy weather on the way, the Seahawks needed a pair of singles victories to nail down the match and Kharkevich, veteran Christina Riley and Cameron obliged.

Kharkevich routed Caroline Lindsey, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6 singles and Riley followed with a 6-1, 6-0 dispatching of Renz at No. 4 singles for the clincher. Cameron added a 6-1, 6-0 romp over Vaughn at No. 5 singles for her fourth straight win to open the season.

The Seahawks entertain the Phoenix on Friday at 2 p.m. in the second leg of a four-match homestand.
