NORFOLK, Virginia – No. 47 UNCW concluded a two-match weekend road swing to Virginia by beating former Colonial Athletic Association rival Old Dominion, 6-1, in men’s tennis action Saturday at the Folkes Stevens Tennis Center.

The Seahawks, who edged No. 37 VCU, 4-3, on Friday in Richmond, won their fifth match in a row to increase their record to 11-6 this season. The Monarchs are now 11-7.

Coach Mait DuBois and his squad made quick work of the Monarchs, taking the first two doubles matches off the court and sweeping five of the six singles pairings.

In doubles, No. 68 Pedro Mol and Kaue Pereira got things rolling at No. 1 by trimming Jonas Kuwert and Dante Terenzio, 8-4. Rafael Aita and Sam Williams, ranked 56th, then secured the early point with an 8-3 triumph over Zvonimir Podvinski and Koen Wiggemans. It represented the ninth time the Seahawks have won the doubles point this spring.

Junior Carlos Lopez Villa picked up a point for ODU in singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Aita at No. 1, but the Seahawks responded by winning the remaining five matches for the convincing win.

With the match squared at 1-all, Mol romped over Terenzio, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2 singles and junior Sam Williams took down Kuwert, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 3 to hike the score to 3-1. Sophomore Christiaan Van der Burgh, who had a hand in clinching Friday’s win, delivered again with a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Abdoulaye Camara at the No. 6 position.

Pereira and Santtu Leskinen, meanwhile, tacked on wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles to account for the remaining points. It was Leskinen’s 12th singles victory of the campaign, a high-water mark for the team, which stands 60-33 in singles matches.

The Seahawks return to Wilmington to close out the regular season with a pair of home matches against rival East Carolina and UNC Charlotte. UNCW next battles the Pirates on Saturday, April 5, at 2 p.m.
