BUIES CREEK, North Carolina - Junior Kosta Blank outlasted Josep Baro in three sets at No. 4 singles to lift No. 35 UNCW over upset-minded Campbell, 4-3, in non-conference men's tennis action Wednesday at CU's Nisbet Tennis Center.
The Seahawks, playing only their fifth match away from home this season, won their third straight match to increase their record to 12-4. Campbell dipped to 7-8.
Coach Mait DuBois and his club won the doubles point by sweeping all three matches and after the Seahawks built a 3-1 lead, the Camels rallied to tie the score at 3-all.
Blank, a junior from Kfar Sava, Israel, took the first set against Baro, 6-4, before suffering a 6-4 setback in the second set. Blank then gave the Seahawks the clincher with a 6-3 victory in the third set, helping UNCW snap a two-game road losing streak.
UNCW dominated doubles play as Blank and Chris Cooprider, ranked 88th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, coasted past Baro and partner Adrien Rossignon, 8-2, at No. 1 doubles and Michael Reilly teamed with Sam Williams for an 8-4 triumph over Fernando Guillen and David Clavera at the No. 2 slot. UNCW's No. 3 team of Rafael Aita and Pedro Mol made it a clean sweep by beating Iwdal August and Ondrej Kralik, 8-5.
Seahawk freshman Kaue Pereira increased the score to 2-0 in singles by bageling August, 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 position. After Rossignon upset Aita at the top of the lineup, Williams extended the score to 3-1 by downing Kralik, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 6.
Guillen then came from behind to edge Cooprider, 2-6, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 2 and Clavera rallied past Mol, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 3 to bring the match even, setting up Blank's heroics.
The Seahawks return home to entertain Old Dominion on Sunday in their first conference match of the season. Doubles action begins at Noon.
