WILMINGTON, North Carolina - UNCW sophomore Chris Cooprider has been selected the Colonial Athletic Association's Men's Tennis Player-of-the-Week after helping the Seahawks jump to No. 46 in the ITA national rankings.
Cooprider, a resident of Denver, Colo., went 3-1 at No. 3 singles as the Seahawks defeated No. 55 Cornell, CAA rival William & Mary and Cal-Santa Barbara last week. Cooprider outlasted Cornell's Mirza Klis, 6-3, 1-6, 6-1, topped W&M's Jamie Whiteford, 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (7), and edged UCSB's Taylor Chavez Goggin, 7-6, 7-6. He lost to Spencer Smith of No. 38 BYU, 6-2, 6-2.
The Cherry Creek High School graduate improved to 13-3 in singles and played a major role as the Seahawks pushed their record to 15-4 this spring.
"Chris came up very big for us this past week," said Mait DuBois, UNCW's fourth-year coach. "Clinching the match against William & Mary definitely stands out as a highlight. Chris showed a lot of poise and toughness to win the deciding tiebreaker, 9-7, against a very good opponent. It was especially nice that his family was there to share the moment with him.
"Chris has really made some strides as a player and he has been a real rock for us. His wins over Cornell and UCSB were equally impressive. I am pleased to see he is being recognized by the conference."
The Seahawks are idle until traveling to Conway, S.C., on Thursday, April 7, to battle regional rival Coastal Carolina.
