UNCW Athletic Hall of Fame Guidelines

  PURPOSE

     Founded in 1998, the UNCW Athletic Hall of Fame is designed to recognize and honor former student-athletes, coaches, administrators and other individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the athletic program at The University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

  MEMBERSHIP CRITERIA

     Membership into the UNCW Athletic Hall of Fame shall be limited to those individuals who have brought positive recognition to the university, enhancing the reputation of the university as well as him/herself.

General Criteria

The Hall of Fame shall be open to individuals who have made outstanding contributions in one of the following areas:

• A superior competitor
• A teacher-coach with a distinguished record
• An administrator who has made a long-term, exemplary contribution through strong leadership
• An individual who has brought distinction to the university's athletic program in other ways

Specific Criteria

• The candidate must be of good character and reputation, and not have been a source of embarassment in any way to the university.
• The candidate must have been in good standing following termination of relationship with the university.
• If a student-athlete, the candidate must have left the university in good academic standing.
• If a teacher-coach or administrator, the candidate must have held that position for at least five academic years.
• A period of no less than five years must have elapsed since graduation or departure from the university.
• The candidate must have demonstrated good citizenship, both in college and after leaving the university.
• Additional consideration will be given for continued contributions to society through community activities, performance in chosen fields which bring credit and distinction of the university.

  NOMINATION PROCESS

• Nominations can be made by anyone and will be solicited through the local news media, the campus newspaper and the UNCW alumni publication.
• Nominations will be particularly solicited from UNCW coaches, administrators and the Hall of Fame committee.
• Nominees from the previous induction will be automatically considered by the committee.
• A deadline for submitting nominations will be established by the selection committee.
• All nominations must be received by the first meeting of the Hall of Fame committee.
• Nomination forms will be published in game programs. They will also be made available through the Sports Information Office.

  SELECTION COMMITTEE

     The selection committee shall consist of representatives of the university and the community. At-large representatives on the selection committee will be appointed by the director of athletics. The athletic director or his/her designee will serve as chairman of the committee. Appointments are for one-year terms and may be renewed annually.

  SELECTION

     Voting will be by secret written ballot and announcement of the inductees will be made through the UNCW Athletic Communications Office.

  INDUCTION CEREMONY

• A luncheon or dinner will be held to honor the inductees.
• Inductees may choose those who will present them at the formal ceremony (usually a former classmate or coach). Inductees and their families will be guests of the university for a special ceremony.
• Each inductee will be presented with an engraved plaque and a lifetime pass to all athletic events.
• A plaque, featuring a photograph of the honoree, will also be placed in a designated area to commemorate the induction.
• Former teammates of the inductees will be informed of the induction ceremonies and invited to be present. Inductees must be present for induction ceremonies or designate an appropriate representative.

  NUMBER OF INDUCTEES

• No more than five living inductees will be honored annually.
• Posthumous inductees will be considered as well.
