GREENVILLE, North Carolina – The 55th-ranked UNCW men’s tennis team capped its regular season by defeating rival East Carolina, 5-2, on Saturday at the River Birch Tennis Center.

The Seahawks won their eighth consecutive match to push their record to 16-4 heading into next weekend’s Colonial Athletic Association Men’s Tennis Championships in Williamsburg, Va. ECU stands 15-5 this spring.

UNCW improved to 3-4 on the road by winning the doubles point and taking four singles matches in the 52nd meeting of the state foes.

In doubles action, UNCW’s No. 2 team of Rafael Aita and Christiaan Vander der Burgh raced past ECU’s John Schmitt and Mario Martinez, 8-2, in the first match off the court. After ECU’s Joran Vleigen and Colin Roller upset No. 20 UNCW’s Kosta Blank and Chris Cooprider at the top of the lineup, UNCW picked up the point via an 8-4 decision by Santtu Leskinen and Zach Hublitz over Patriek Wolterbeek and Nicolas Soriano.

The Seahawks won the first three singles matches off the court to make quick work of the Pirates. Sophomore Sam Williams breezed past Schmitt, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 3 spot and Cooprider clipped Soriano, 6-2, 6-3, for his eighth straight victory at No. 2 singles.

Blank then clinched the match with a convincing 6-2, 6-1, decision over Martinez at the No. 4 spot. Blank picked up his 54th career singles win to move into a tie for fourth on the all-time list.

Hublitz registered UNCW’s other singles victory when the McLean, Va., edged Wolterbeek, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9), at No. 5 singles.

The Seahawks travel to Williamsburg next week in search of their third CAA title in five years.
