RICHMOND, Virginia – The 47th-ranked UNCW men’s tennis team opened a two-match road swing to Virginia by defeating No. 37 VCU, 4-3, on Friday at the Thalhimer Tennis Center.

The Seahawks, who knocked off the Rams on the home courts for the first time, raised their record to 10-6 this spring. VCU stands 12-9 overall.

UNCW was playing its ninth nationally-ranked opponent of the season and moved to 5-4 against ranked foes.

The two former Colonial Athletic Association rivals played singles first and battled to a 3-all draw before settling the match in doubles action.

With the score knotted at 3-all, UNCW’s 68th-ranked Kaue Pereira and Pedro Mol won the first match of doubles with a key 8-4 decision over Michal Voscek and Wilder Pimental. After No. 43 Alexis Heugas and Nick Jones of VCU won at the top of the lineup, the match came down to the No. 3 position, where Christiaan Van der Burgh and Zach Hublitz sealed the important win with an 8-4 victory against Alejandro Argente and Jean-Baptiste Mateo.

In singles, the Seahawks registered wins at the No. 1, No. 3 and No. 6 positions.

Senior Rafael Aita, ranked 69th, cruised past the 60th-ranked Heugas, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 1 singles for his 10th win of the season and junior Sam Williams trounced Jones, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 3 slot. Van der Burgh, 5-1 in singles this spring, collected UNCW’s third win at No. 6 with a 6-4, 6-1 conquest of Pimental.

The Seahawks travel down I-64 to Norfolk for a 2 p.m. showdown on Saturday with Old Dominion at the Folkes Stevens Tennis Center.
