WILMINGTON, North Carolina - Two-time reigning Colonial Athletic Association champion UNCW isn't resting on its laurels as several returning letterwinners have been competing this summer to prepare for the fall season.
Payne McLeod has carried his success from the school season into the summer with a strong outing at the Monroe Invitational in mid-June. "I played well and my short game was strong," said McLeod. "It was a tough course where you had to be strong with driving accuracy. The rough was difficult and the greens very fast." After struggling in the opening round at 6-over, McLeod (76-73-71-72=292) returned to form, playing closer to par the following three rounds and finished tied for 46th.
Thomas Bass has played in two tournaments this summer finishing 13th at the South Carolina Open and fourth at the Rice Planters Amateur Tournament. Bass finished five shots off the pace at the SC Open competing as an amateur. He continued his strong play finishing four shots back at Snee Farm CC in the Rice Planters. His 64 in the final round tied fellow Seahawk Stefan Brewer for low-round honors at the tournament.
Brewer finished one shot back of Bass with a four-day total of 273 to finish fifth. Brewer, along with McLeod, is playing at the US Amateur qualifier in China Grove, N.C., at the Warrior Golf Club. He will compete at the North Carolina Match Play Championships later this summer.
