WILMINGTON, North Carolina - Fresh off their second straight Colonial Athletic Association title, UNCW Head Coach Matt Clark and his Seahawks compete this week at the Athens Regional, hosted Georgia, on the University Golf Course.
For UNCW, this will be its third straight NCAA tournament appearance and sixth overall. The Seahawks edged Georgia State by two strokes for the conference title, the fourth in the program's history.
The regional runs from May 17 - 19 with a practice round being held on the 16th.
Leading the Seahawks at the CAA Championship were junior Thomas Bass and red-shirt freshman Patrick Sawrey. Both finished tied for fourth overall as Bass posted a two-under-par 69 in the final round to help rally the Seahawks past the Panthers. Sophomore Payne McLeod also gave the Seahawks a top-10 finish, placing eighth.
Bass was named CAA Golfer-of-the-Year after finishing as the top-ranked individual in the conference. He joined Chris Buffaloe, Sean Dougherty and Josh Brock as Seahawks to have earned the award. Clark, meanwhile, was named Coach-of-the-Year for the second straight year and third time in his career. Bass was joined by McLeod as First-Team All-CAA.
Brewer and Bass both played in the 2010 New Haven Regional while McLeod finished eighth last spring at the Virginia Tech Regional.
The University of Georgia course measures 7,253 yards and is a par 71. Built in 1968, it was designed by Robert Trent Jones.
Joining the Seahawks at the regional will be top-seed Alabama, North Florida, New Mexico, host Georgia, Iowa, East Carolina, Long Beach State, defending national champion Augusta State, Wake Forest, Houston, UT Arlington and Loyola (Md.).
