SOUTHPORT, North CarolinaPayne McLeod carded a one-over-73 in the opening round as UNCW joins three schools within three shots of first-round leader Drexel at the Colonial Athletic Association championships on Friday at the Reserve Club of St. James Plantation.

Drexel recorded a 15-over-par 303 in the first round to take the early lead. William & Mary is second at 304 followed by the Seahawks (305) and fourth-place James Madison (306). UNCW is the reigning two-time defending champions.

James Braunsberg of Drexel and William & Mary’s Alex Hicks were the only two golfers to fashioned under-par scores, as both are tied for the medalist lead with one-under-71’s. Christopher Crawford of Drexel finished the opening round even and is in third, followed by McLeod in fourth. Three golfers are tied for fifth entering Saturday’s second round.

UNCW junior Stefan Brewer is tied for 10th at four-over.
