Fighting Irish
Gridiron Classic
WILMINGTON, North Carolina - The Seahawks head to South Bend, Indiana, this weekend where they'll compete in the Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic, hosted by Notre Dame. The Seahawks, through two tournaments, are the top-ranked team in the Colonial Athletic Association in Golfstat.com's initial rankings for the 2012-13 season. UNCW is coming off a sixth-place finish at the Rees Jones Invitational last weekend. The Seahawks struggled in the opening round carding a 309, but ralled in the second round with a 303 and moved into the upper half of the standings with a 298 in the third and final round. Igniting the surge in the final two rounds was senior Thomas Bass, who in the final round jumped 20 spots on the leaderboard to finish in a tie for 11th. Joining Bass in the top-20 was junior Payne McLeod, who placed 18th. The Seahawks will be paired with golfers from UT Arlington and Boston College in the first round. They will tee off at noon on Sunday. The Seahawks will have a short turnaround before their next tournament when they visit Johnson City, Tenn., for the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate on Oct. 12-14. |
