Tar Heel Intercollegiate
Star News Online Preview of 2012-13 Seahawks WILMINGTON, North Carolina - The Seahawks open their 2012-13 season this weekend at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate on Sept. 15-16. UNCW enters its fifth season under the direction of Head Coach Matt Clark as two-time defending Colonial Athletic Association champions. UNCW faces a tough tournament field, one that's dotted with ACC opposition and programs that reached the NCAA tournament last spring. East Carolina reached the stroke play portion of the NCAA Championship before bowing out. Also playing in the NCAA tournament were Duke, Charlotte, NC State and Notre Dame. The Seahawks return five starts from last year's edition and add talented newcomer Jens Geweke (GUH vek uh) to the mix. Geweke finished second in the qualifier and will mak his collegiate debut this weekend. Junior Payne McLeod will play in the number one position followed by Geweke, Thomas Bass, Ryan Nagy and Stefan Brewer, in that order. Bass enters his final season with the Seahawks as the Colonial Athletic Association's reigning Player of the Year. Bass finished fourth at the CAA Championships. Brewer will look to return to his freshman form from 2009-10 when he was named the CAA Rookie of the Year. After red-shirting the following season, he struggled through his sophomore season, but made gains during the summer when he qualified for the US Amateur Open in Cherry Hill, Colorado. |
