WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW softball team split a non-conference doubleheader against long-time rival Coastal Carolina Wednesday at Boseman Field.

The Chanticleers (23-11) rallied to take the first game, 2-1, before the Seahawks (17-17) responded with a 2-1 extra-inning victory in the nightcap.

UP NEXT: UNCW travels to Hofstra for a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series that begins with an 11 a.m. doubleheader on April 5. CCU returns home to host Liberty in a Big South doubleheader Saturday at Noon.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game One): UNCW jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as freshman Nella Chamblee recorded a two-out hit to center field that plated junior Jessica Rappe, who reached base earlier in the inning on an error.

The score would remain 1-0 in favor of the Seahawks until the top of the sixth, when junior Kory Hayden hit a one-out fly ball to shallow center field that plated two runs and gave CCU a 2-1 lead.

That would be all the support that junior Kiana Quolas would need as she retired the final 10 batters she faced to give the Chanticleers the one-run victory.

AT THE PLATE (Game One): Hayden was 1-for-3 with two RBI to highlight a CCU lineup that finished the contest with five hits.

Chamblee was 1-for-3 with one run batted in for UNCW. Senior Morgan Ayers and sophomore Darian Roberts had the Seahawks other two hits in the contest.

IN THE CIRCLE (Game One): Quolas picked up the win for the Chanticleers to improve to 16-4 on the season. In a complete game effort, Quolas surrendered one run on three hits and one walk. She struck out five.

Freshman Peyton Jordan took the loss in game one to move to 6-10 on the season. In seven innings in the circle, Jordan allowed two runs on five hits. She did not issue a walk and struck out three.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE (Game One):  The two teams combined to leave just eight runners on base (CCU 4; UNCW 4) … Jordan retired 13 consecutive batters between the first and sixth innings … Neither team attempted to steal a base in the contest … Quolas retired 18 of the final 20 batters she faced in the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game Two): UNCW once again took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Chamblee recorded a two-out single to left field to plate senior Brittany Gamby from third.

Coastal Carolina tied the game at 1-all in the top of the sixth, as Quolas reached base on a leadoff single and was replaced by senior pinch runner Courtney Howell, who advanced to third on a stolen base and error before scoring later in the frame on a wild pitch.

The game would remain deadlocked at 1-all until the bottom of the ninth when, with the international tie breaker in effect, sophomore Erin Brown ripped a leadoff single to left field that scored sophomore Taylor Matkins for the game-winning run.

AT THE PLATE (Game Two): Brown and Chamblee were both 1-for-4 with one run batted in to lead the Seahawks attack. Senior Casey Shue was 1-for-2 in two official trips to the plate with two walks.

Sophomore Bri Chiusano went 2-for-4 for Coastal Carolina while five players finished with one hit apiece for the Chanticleers.

IN THE CIRCLE (Game Two): Jordan picked up the victory for the Seahawks in game two as she did not allow a hit in two innings of work in relief. Junior Casey Rowland got the start and pitched the first seven innings. She surrendered one run on seven hits and one walk while striking out 10.

Senior Ashley Bagwell took the loss for the Chanticleers to move to 7-6 on the campaign. Bagwell allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits and three walks in eight plus innings in the circle. She struck out eight.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE (Game Two): The teams teamed up to leave 16 runners on base in the contest (CCU 8; UNCW 8) … The two teams combined for 20 strikeouts in the contest (CCU 12; UNCW 8) … UNCW’s 4-5-6-7 hitters all recorded one hit in the contest … There were a total of eight stolen bases (CCU 4; UNCW 4) … The Chanticleers recorded the two extra-base hits in the contest, both doubles.  

NOTES: UNCW saw its record against Coastal Carolina move to 69-24 with the split as they halted a nine-game losing skid to the Chanticleers … The Seahawks moved to 13-11 at home this season … UNCW picked up its first win of the season (1-8) when scoring two runs or less with their 2-1 victory in the nightcap … UNCW scored in the first inning of both contests as they improved to 11-7 this season when plating a run in the first inning … The Seahawks improved to 2-1 this season in extra-inning games … UNCW also saw its recorded in one-run games move to 6-8 on the season … Freshman Merritt Wilkinson has now reached base in 25 straight contests … Freshman Nella Chamblee’s two RBI increased her team-leading total to 21 .. Junior Casey Rowland recorded double-digit strikeouts for the second time this season and the fifth time in her career with her 10-strikeout effort in the nightcap.
