|Softball Preview: Delaware|
The Seahawks and Blue Hens are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game Sunday, with action on both days slated to start at Noon. Live stats and video streaming will be available for all three contests and can be accessed by clicking on the respective links at the top of the page.
Sunday’s contest has also been designated the team’s annual Molly Maid Pink Game/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) StrikeOut Cancer contest. The team will be wearing pink apparel to support the cause and Elwood Moore, father of freshman shortstop Lauren Moore, will throw out the first pitch in honor of his late wife, Susan, who lost her battle with breast cancer in 2010.
UNCW (15-15; 2-1 CAA) heads into the weekend looking to build off a solid start to conference play that saw it take two out of three games in a road CAA series at Drexel last weekend. Moore, the CAA Rookie-of-the-Week, recorded five hits and three walks in 10 trips to the plate to pace a Seahawks lineup that combined to hit .313 and drew 16 walks during the series. Senior Casey Shue also had a solid weekend at the plate as she recorded three hits, including her second home run of the season, to highlight a four-RBI series. In the circle, freshman Peyton Jordan had one of her best outings in a UNCW uniform to date, limiting the Dragons to just one unearned run on five hits and one walk in seven innings of work during a 3-1 victory.
Delaware (9-15; 1-2 CAA) makes its way south attempting to build off a 5-3 victory at Penn on Thursday. Junior Jessica Grisler leads the Blue Hens attack with a .372 batting average, 29 hits and 12 RBI while freshman Giovanna Kolofer is second in both batting average (.342) and RBI (9). Fourth-year Head Coach Jaime Wohlbach has relied upon a trio of pitcher this season as sophomores Kelly Lupton and Kiersten Coffman and freshman Carolyn Szymanski have combined to throw 140.2 of the team’s 155.2 innings in the field this season. They have teamed up to post a 3.58 earned run average and 100 strikeouts in that span.
The Blue Hens begin the series with a 23-10 lead in the all-time series against the Seahawks as the two conference foes meet for the 11th consecutive season on the diamond. UNCW holds a 7-8 record versus Delaware at Boseman Field, but the Blue Hens have won each of the last two series between the two programs in the Port City.
The Seahawks return to action April 2 when they face Coastal Carolina in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Boseman Field.
