|Seahawks Take Two In Beach Bash Saturday|
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW softball team defeated UNCG, 5-2, and Bucknell, 3-2, to take both of its games in the UNCW Beach Bash on Saturday at Boseman Field.
The Seahawks moved to 8-7 overall and improved to 3-1 during the UNCW Beach Bash with the two-game sweep. In other action in the UNCW Beach Bash on Saturday, UNCG defeated Brown, 4-0, and Brown out-lasted Bucknell, 10-9, in eight innings.
UNCW closes out the UNCW Beach Bash Sunday with an 11:30 a.m. contest against Brown. UNCG will face Bucknell in the first contest at 9 a.m.
HOW IT HAPPENED (UNCG): UNCG took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as it used a pair of sacrifice flies from senior Katelyn Bedwell and sophomore Nicole Thomas to plate sophomores Allison Geiner and Lindsay Thomas, who opened the inning with back-to-back walks.
UNCW cut into the Spartans lead in the bottom half of the opening frame, using a UNCG error to score freshman Merritt Wilkinson and make it a 2-1 contest.
The Seahawks took over the lead in the bottom of the second, using two-out hits from junior Casey Rowland and freshman Lauren Moore to gain a 3-2 advantage.
The Seahawks maintained their one-run lead until the bottom of the sixth, when Rowland hit a two-run homerun down the left-field line to give UNCW a 5-2 cushion and close out the scoring.
AT THE PLATE (UNCG): Rowland went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI to lead UNCW while freshman Lauren Moore was 1-for-3 with a run batted in. Moore was one of six players to finish with one hit for the Seahawks in the contest.
Alcala and Bedwell both finished with two hits apiece for UNCG with Bedwell driving in one. Geiner and and Thomas scored one run each.
IN THE CIRCLE (UNCG): Rowland improved to 4-3 on the season as she allowed two runs on five hits and three walks in seven innings of work. She struck out seven.
Sophomore Nicole Thomas took the loss for the Spartans to move to 1-4 on the campaign. Thomas surrendered five runs (four earned) on eight hits and two walks in six innings in the circle.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE (UNCG): The two teams combined to leave 11 runners on base (UNCG 6, UNCW 5) … Five of the Seahawks eight base hits in the contest were for extra bases (four doubles, one homerun) … Neither team stole a base in the contest … UNCW’s 2-3-4-5 hitters all had one hit apiece … The two teams combined to put their leadoff runner on base in just five of 13 attempts (UNCW 3, UNCG 2) … The teams scored runs on four of those five occasions.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Bucknell): UNCW jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Shue singled home Wilkinson, who opened the inning with a walk.
The Seahawks doubled their advantage to 2-0 in the fifth as Shue reached base on a one-out double to left field before being replaced by sophomore pinch runner Taylor Matkins, who stole third and scored on a throwing error on the play to give UNCW a 2-0 margin.
Moore increased the Seahawks advantage to 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth with a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Rowland, who reached base on a single to right field to open the inning.
Bucknell threatened to tie the game in the top of the seventh as it used a two-out double from senior Courtney Conover to score sophomores Mariah Midyette and Amada Fazio and trim the UNCW lead to 3-2. Freshman pitcher Peyton Jordan would work out of the jam, however, forcing the next batter she faced into a groundout to end the contest.
AT THE PLATE (Bucknell): Shue was 3-for-3 with a run batted in to highlight a UNCW lineup that finished with seven base hits in the contest. Ayers, Moore, Rowland and Wilkinson all finished with one hit apiece with Moore recording a RBI on a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
Conover went 1-for-3 with two RBI to lead a Bison attack that recorded four base hits.
IN THE CIRCLE (Bucknell): Jordan went the distance for UNCW to even her season mark at 4-4. She allowed two unearned runs on four hits and one walk and struck out eight.
Sophomore Dana Nielson took the loss for Bucknell to level her record at 1-1. Nielson pitched all six innings for the Bison, giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks. She finished with four strikeouts.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE (Bucknell): The two teams combined to leave seven runners on base (UNCW 7, Bucknell 5) … Bucknell was held without a hit until the top of the fourth inning as Jordan retired the first 11 batters she faced … All four of the Bison’s hits were singles … The leadoff runner reached base just three times in 13 total opportunities (UNCW 2, Bucknell 1) … Three of Bucknell’s four hits came from the top three hitters in its lineup … UNCW put a runner into scoring position in five of its six trips to the plate.
