CHARLESTON, South Carolina – The Seahawks erupted for seven runs on 10 hits and freshman Peyton Jordan recorded a four-hit shutout in her collegiate debut as UNCW defeated Maryland-Eastern Shore, 7-0, in collegiate softball action Friday in the Charleston Southern Softball Tournament at Buccaneer Field.

Seniors Morgan Ayers and Casey Shue and junior Jessica Rappe tallied two hits apiece to power a UNCW lineup that finished with four extra-base knocks in the contest. Junior Casey Rowland went 1-for-3 with two RBI while freshman Nella Chamblee drew a pair of walks and recorded a RBI.

In the circle, Jordan scattered four hits and two walks while striking out eight in seven innings in the circle as the Waxhaw, N.C., product picked up the victory in her collegiate debut.

For UMES, junior Morgan King went 2-for-3 with a double while sophomore Emily Diseroad and sophomore Abria Tinsley accounted for the Hawks other two base hits in ballgame. Tinsley took the loss in the circle for UMES, allowing four earned runs on seven hits and two walks in four innings of work.

UP NEXT:UNCW’s nightcap against Charleston Southern was postponed after seven innings with the score tied at 1-all due to darkness. The two teams will resume their game in the top of the eighth after the Seahawks finish their contest against future CAA foe Elon, scheduled to start Saturday morning at 9 a.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED: UNCW opened the scoring in the bottom of the second with a squeeze bunt by senior Morgan Ayers that plated Rappe to give the Seahawks a 1-0 lead.

Shue doubled the Seahawks advantage to 2-0 in the bottom of the third with a solo home run before UNCW closed out the scoring with five runs on five hits in the bottom of the fifth to build a 7-0 cushion. Rowland opened the scoring in the fifth with a two-run double while a single by sophomore Erin Brown, a groundout by Chamblee and a Hawks error accounted for the final three runs of the frame. 

NOTES: UNCW won its season opener for the third straight season … Shue’s home run against the Hawks was the fifth of her career … Four freshmen were in the starting lineup for UNCW as Lauren Moore, Nella Chamblee, Peyton Jordan and Merritt Wilkinson all made their collegiate debuts ... Fellow freshman Claudia Spinelli made her collegiate debut as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the sixth against UMES … Friday’s contest served as the first meeting between the two programs … The two teams combined for six stolen bases in the contest (UNCW 4, UMES 2) … Both teams left six runners on base.
