|Panthers Edge Seahawks In Series Finale|
PANTHERSVILLE, Georgia – A solo home run by freshman Jordan Brown in the bottom of the fourth proved to be the difference as Georgia State edged UNCW, 1-0, in the finale of a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series Sunday at the Bob Heck Softball Complex.
The Panthers improved to 27-15 overall and 7-4 in league play as they captured the series with the one-run victory. The Seahawks, meanwhile, moved to 13-24 and 2-9 as they suffered their third one-run setback in league play. UNCW returns to action Tuesday as it hosts state foe UNCG in a 5 p.m. contest at Boseman Field.
Brown’s solo shot highlighted a 3-for-3 day at the plate for the McDonough, Ga., product as she tallied three of the Panthers’ five base hits in the contest. Sophomores Callie Alford and Lauren Coleman accounted for GSU’s other two base hits. Junior pitcher Katyln Medlam scattered eight hits and one walk in seven innings in the circle for the Panthers to improve to 15-6 on the season.
Senior Lauryn Buckworth was 3-for-3 to lead a Seahawks lineup that recorded eight hits but was unable to capitalize on those opportunities as they left seven runners on base. Freshman Kayla Pine took the loss for the Seahawks as she moved to 4-2 on the season. Pine pitched three innings in relief and allowed one run on three hits and one walk.
Brown’s solo shot, her second of the season, came on a 1-0 count after the Panthers had the first two batters of the inning retired on fly balls to the outfield.
UNCW had its best chance to get on the board in the fifth as junior Morgan McCann drew a walk and attempted to score one batter later on a base hit by Buckworth, but was thrown out at the plate.
The Seahawks were able to get the tying run on base in the top of the seventh when junior Camry Wagner reached on a two-out error, but Medlam retired the next batter she faced to end the contest.
