WILMINGTON, North Carolina - Redshirt sophomore Jordyn Schmidt belted a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead Team Teal to a 6-2 victory over Team Navy in the first game of the Seahawk Clash Thursday at Boseman Field.
Team Teal holds a one-game lead in the best-of-three split-squad series. Game two of the Seahawk Clash will take place Friday at 5:30 p.m. Game three will be played at 11 a.m. Saturday if necessary.
With the score tied at 1-all after seven innings, Team Navy took a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth when junior Tori Sewell singled home sophomore Morgan McCann, who began the inning at second base due to the international tie breaker.
A passed ball in the bottom of the eighth would bring home Team Teal's first run of the inning to level the score at 2-all. Team Teal would load the bases later in the frame to set the stage for Schmidt, who sent a full-count offering over the center-field fence for the game-winning grand slam.
Earlier in the contest, Team Navy took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a suicide squeeze that plated freshman Jordin Phillips.
Team Teal had runners in scoring position in each of the first five innings until finally breaking through in the bottom of the sixth on a solo home run from sophomore Jordan Critcher that tied the game at 1-1.
Sophomore hurler Casey Rowland was credited with the victory for Team Teal. Freshman Kayla Pine took the loss in the circle for Team Navy.
