WILMINGTON, North
Carolina - Following a performance that saw her hold regular-season
champion Hofstra without a hit for eight innings, UNCW freshman pitcher Casey Rowland was named the Colonial Athletic Association's Rookie-of-the-Week on
Monday.
Rowland becomes the second Seahawk rookie to earn the honor this season, joining fellow newcomer Jordan Critcher, who was recognized on March 6. "We are happy to hear that Casey was recognized as CAA Rookie-of-the-Week for her performance against Hofstra last weekend," said UNCW Head Coach Kelly Van Houten. "She had a very strong finish to her rookie season and we are confident that she will continue to develop as her career continues." In her final appearance of the 2012 season, Rowland held the Pride without a hit for the first eight innings of the contest before Hofstra was able to break through with two hits and the decisive run in the bottom of the ninth for a 1-0 victory. The Albany, N.Y. product fanned 10 batters and issued just two walks against the Pride as she recorded double-figure strikeouts for the second time in four outings. Rowland ended her freshman season in third place on the program's single-season strikeout list; fanning 139 batters in her inaugural season in the Port City. |
