Wednesday's doubleheader marks the start of a five-game home stand for UNCW (8-38), who returns to the Port City after taking one of three games in their league series at Drexel last weekend.
Junior Lauryn Buckworth continues to pace the team with a .287 batting average while senior Ashley Shingleton tallied two hits in the series with the Dragons to move her team-leading hit total to 35. Senior Stacey Pinno drove in four runs in the series, three of which came on a game-winning home run in the series opener, to give her the team lead in RBI with 11.
In the circle, senior Amanda Davenport and freshman Casey Rowland both surpassed the 100-strikeout plateau for the season last weekend as they teamed up to record 13 strikeouts against the Dragons. Rowland currently leads the team with 109 strikeouts while Davenport has exactly 100 this season.
Coastal Carolina (33-17) puts the finishing touches on a five-game road trip with their visit Wednesday after falling in two of three games at Big South member Campbell over the weekend.
Freshman Kory Hayden has served as the focal point of the Chanticleers lineup this season, pacing the team in batting average (.382), hits (50), doubles (9), home runs (12) and RBI (36). Senior Sarah Maples is second with a .313 batting average and 47 hits while senior Chelsea Pineda has smacked 10 home runs this season to rank second on the team with 29 RBI.
Freshman Kiana Quolas has put together an impressive rookie season in the circle for coach Kelley Green's squad, posting a 19-8 record and a 1.56 ERA in 29 appearances. Quolas has hurled nine shutouts and has 20 complete games to her credit as she has struck out 107 and walked just 32 in 161.2 innings pitched.
Coastal Carolina holds a 63-24 edge in the all-time series with UNCW and has won four straight, sweeping the last two doubleheaders between the two programs. The Seahawks last victory in the series came in a 9-6 triumph during the nightcap of a March 10, 2010 twin bill at Boseman Field, the last time the two sides faced each other in Wilmington.
Following its doubleheader with Coastal Carolina, UNCW will finish the home portion of its 2012 schedule as it hosts Delaware in a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series this weekend. The Seahawks and Blue Hens will play a doubleheader Saturday and a single game Sunday, with action on both days scheduled to begin at Noon.
