|Pride Blanks Seahawks In Series Finale|
HEMPSTEAD, New York – Junior Morgan Lashley pitched a two-hit shutout to lead Hofstra to a 4-0 victory over UNCW in the finale of a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series Sunday at the Hofstra Softball Stadium.
The Pride improved to 19-8 overall and 3-3 in CAA play as it swept the weekend series from the Seahawks, who moved to 17-20 and 3-5 with the setback.
Lashley faced just three batters over the limit as she scattered two hits and recorded 13 strikeouts in a complete-game effort to move her record to 12-3 on the season. Junior Casey Rowland took the loss for the Seahawks, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and one walk in six innings of work. Rowland struck out 10 as she moved to 9-8 on the campaign.
Junior Erin Trippi was 1-for-2 with two RBI while sophomore Kim Smith was 1-for-3 with a run batted in as both players hit home runs in the fifth inning to lead the Pride to victory. Three players – sophomore Chloe Fitzgerald, freshman Lacey Clark and senior Tori Rocha – accounted for Hofstra’s other three hits in the contest.
Junior Jessica Rappe and sophomore Erin Brown tallied the Seahawks two base hits in the contest.
UP NEXT: Both teams return to action Wednesday with road doubleheaders. UNCW travels to state foe UNCG for a 4 p.m. twinbill while Hofstra is at Iona in a 3 p.m. start.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Hofstra opened the scoring in the third as senior Tori Rocha reached base on a one-out single and scored two batters later on a UNCW error.
Hofstra expanded their margin in the fifth, using a solo home run from Smith and a two-run blast Trippi to build a 4-0 cushion and close out the scoring.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE: The two teams combined to leave eight runners on base (UNCW 3; Hofstra 5) … Four of the seven base hits in the contest were for extra-bases … There was one stolen base attempt in the contest … Lashley struck out all but one of the Seahawks’ nine batters in the starting lineup.
