WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW softball team heads to the Empire State this weekend as it faces Hofstra in a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series at the Hofstra Softball Stadium.

The Seahawks and Pride are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 2 p.m. before wrapping up the weekend series Sunday with a single game slated for Noon.

UNCW (17-17; 3-2 CAA) returns to the road after a earning a split of a mid-week doubleheader against long-time rival Coastal Carolina on Wednesday at Boseman Field. Freshman Nella Chamblee, who registered two hits and two RBI during the team’s split with the Chanticleers, now leads the team in both batting average (.318) and runs batted in (21) while senior Brittany Gamby ranks second on the team with a .312 batting average.

Freshman hurler Peyton Jordan picked up her seventh victory of the season during Wednesday’s twinbill as she allowed just two earned runs in nine innings of work to move her ERA to 3.21. Junior left-hander Casey Rowland also had a solid outing, recording 10 strikeouts versus the Chanticleers to move her strikeout total to 115 for the season.

Defending regular season and tournament champion Hofstra (16-8; 0-3 CAA) begins the weekend looking to build off a doubleheader sweep of visiting Delaware State on Wednesday. Sophomore Chloe Fitzgerald highlights a Pride lineup that boats a combined batting average of .302 with a team-best 32 hits in 83 plate appearances (.390). Sophomore first baseman Maggie Hawkins has been the main source of power for Head Coach Bill Edwards roster as she has belted five home runs and driven in a best-best 23 RBI to date.  

In the circle, juniors Morgan Lashley and Taylor Pirone have combined to pitch 152.2 of the team’s 158.0 innings in the field. Both players possess sub-2.00 earned run averages for the season, with Pirone (1.31) leading the CAA in that category while Lashley (1.86) ranks fourth.

Hofstra holds a 29-3 lead in the all-time series against UNCW as all but two of their previous 32 meetings have come since the 2004 season. The Pride has won 11 straight in the series, including a pair of shutout victories last March at Boseman Field. UNCW’s last victory versus Hofstra came in a 2-1 triumph on April 10, 2009.

UNCW is back in action April 9 as it faces state foe UNCG in a 4 p.m. doubleheader in Greensboro.
