WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW softball team fell in both games of a non-conference doubleheader against Presbyterian Saturday at Boseman Field.

The Blue Hose (12-10) rallied for a 3-2 victory over the Seahawks (12-12) in the opener before posting a 4-1 decision in the nightcap.  

UP NEXT: The two teams will conclude their three-game series Sunday with a 10 a.m. contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game One): UNCW took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third, using singles from freshmen Nella Chamblee and Lauren Moore to put runners on base before senior Brittany Gamby brought both home on a double down the left-field line.

The score would remain the same until the top of the seventh, when Presbyterian took advantage of four hits, highlighted by a RBI double by junior Erin Taylor and a two-run single from sophomore Jordan Ashley, to go in front, 3-2.

The Seahawks would have a chance to tie the game in the bottom half of the frame, putting its leadoff runner aboard, but sophomore Sydney Siegler retired the next three batters in order to preserve the one-run lead and take the contest.

AT THE PLATE (Game One): Ashley was 1-for-3 with two RBI while Taylor was 1-for-3 with one run batted in to pace a Blue Hose lineup that recorded five base knocks. Junior Shelby Petik, sophomore Kersten Legacki and freshman Abby Allen recorded the other three Presbyterian hits. 

Gamby was 1-for-3 with two RBI to lead a UNCW lineup that finished with four hits in the contest. Chamblee, Moore and sophomore Erin Brown had the other three Seahawk hits.

IN THE CIRCLE (Game One): Siegler went the distance for the Blue Hose in the opener, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks in seven innings as she improved to 7-5 on the season. She struck out six.

Junior Casey Rowland got the start for the Seahawks in game one and went six innings, surrendering two runs on three hits and three walks. Sophomore Kayla Pine replaced Rowland in the sixth and allowed one run on two hits to take the loss and even her season mark at 1-1.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE (Game One): The two teams combined to leave just eight runners on base (PC 5/UNCW 3) … Presbyterian’s 4-5-6 hitters all had one hit apiece … UNCW’s bottom four hitters accounted for three of the team’s four hits … The two teams combined to put their leadoff hitter on base in just four of 14 attempts … The Seahawks were retired in order in four of seven innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game Two): Presbyterian took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two as it used a bunt single by junior Jill McLean and a squeeze bunt by Legacki to build the early advantage.

The two teams traded runs in the third. Petik singled up the middle to plate McLean and give Presbyterian a 3-0 lead while freshman Merritt Wilkinson got UNCW on the board in the bottom half of the frame with a RBI triple to score senior Casey Shue and make it a 3-1 contest.

The Blue Hose closed out the scoring in the fifth with a double by Legacki to plate McLean and make it a 4-1 contest.

AT THE PLATE (Game Two): McLean was 4-for-4 with three runs scored while Legacki was 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead Presbyterian. Three players – Jordan, Petick, and sophomore Erin Ruff – all finished with one hit each.

Junior Jessica Rappe was 2-for-3 while Wilkinson was 1-for-3 with a RBI for UNCW. Brown recorded the other base hit in the game for UNCW.

IN THE CIRCLE (Game Two): Freshman Natasha Sherrod went the distance for Presbyterian in game two, allowing just one run on four hits and three walks as she remained undefeated on the season at 4-0.

Freshman Peyton Jordan took the loss for UNCW to move to 5-7 on the campaign. In seven innings in the circle, Jordan surrendered four runs (three earned) on nine hits. She struck out seven and did not issue a walk.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE (Game Two): The two teams combined to leave 11 runners on base (PC 7; UNCW 4) … The Blue Hose top three hitters combined to go 7-for-11 and scored all four of Presbyterian’s runs … The two teams combined for six stolen bases (PC 3; UNCW 3) … The two teams put their leadoff batter aboard in six of 14 attempts.

NOTES: Presbyterian increased its lead in the all-time series to 7-3 as it stretched its winning streak to three straight against UNCW … The Seahawks moved to 3-6 in one-run games this season … UNCW is now 10-7 at home … The Seahawks moved to 0-7 this season when scoring two or fewer runs in a contest … UNCW gave up a run in the first inning for just the fifth time this season as it surrendered two runs in the first inning of the nightcap … Junior Jessica Rappe recorded her team-leading eighth multiple-hit game of the season with her two base knocks in the nightcap … Freshman Merritt Wilkinson has reached base in 15 consecutive contests … Senior Brittany Gamby saw her eight-game hitting streak come to an end as she was 0-for-3 in the nightcap.
