|Rowland Shines In Win Over Retrievers|
The Seahawks improved to 5-6 on the season while the Retrievers slipped to 0-7 on the campaign after dropping the tournament opener to Morehead State, 7-1.
Rowland held UMBC hitless over the final four innings as the improved to 3-2 on the season. She struck out seven and allowed just one walk in her fifth complete game effort of the season.
"It was a fantastic performance by Casey in the circle tonight," said UNCW Head Coach Kristy Norton. She was ahead of nearly every batter and that was a point of emphasis for our pitching staff this week in practice. Our defense did an excellent job behind Casey, but our hitters still need to focus on pushing across runners that are in scoring position."
Junior Chelsea Bertoglio took the loss for UMBC to move to 0-2 on the season. Bertoglio allowed three runs on nine hits and two walks in six innings of work. She struck out three.
UNCW opened the scoring in the bottom of the second, using a wild pitch and a two-run double from McCann to build a 3-0 advantage.
UMBC cut into the deficit in the top of the third as a single through the right side by freshman Danielle O'Neil plated sophomore Kayla Margentino and made it a 3-1 contest.
The Seahawks threatened to expand its lead in the bottom of the fifth, using singles from senior Lauryn Buckworth, Moose and junior KC Shue to load the bases with one out. The Retrievers were able to work out of the jam, forcing the next two batters into fielder's choices to end the inning.
Action in the Seahawk Clash concludes on Sunday. Gardner-Webb and Morehead State open play at 8:30 a.m. while UMBC and Morehead State square off at 10:45 a.m. UNCW begins play with a 1 p.m. game against UMBC before closing out the tournament with a 3 p.m. game versus Gardner-Webb.
