HEMPSTEAD, New York - Senior Erin Wade hurled a two-hit shutout to lead Hofstra to a 3-0 victory over UNCW in the finale of a Colonial Athletic Association series Saturday at the Hofstra Softball Stadium.
The Pride finished the regular season with a 35-13 overall mark and an unblemished 19-0 record in league play as it posted its first undefeated record in conference play since the 1997 season. Hofstra will serve as the top seed for the 2012 CAA Softball Championship, scheduled for May 9-11 at the Hofstra Softball Stadium. The Seahawks finished their season with a 9-45 overall mark and a 4-17 record in league play.
Wade did not issue a walk and struck out six as she improved to 8-8 on the season. Senior Courtney Crews and sophomore Tori Rocha had one hit and a RBI to highlight a Pride lineup that saw six different players record a base knock in the contest.
Senior Ashley Shingleton and freshman Kristen Jernigan accounted for UNCW's two hits in the contest. Senior Amanda Davenport got the start in the circle for the Seahawks; allowing three runs on six hits and three walks in five innings of work to finish her senior season with an 8-22 record. Senior Laura Sykes replaced Davenport in the sixth and held the Pride without a hit in her one inning of relief work in the circle.
Crews staked Hofstra to the lead in the bottom of the first as her single to the shortstop scored junior Rachael Senatore and gave the Pride an early 1-0 advantage.
Hofstra added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth, as Rocha singled home senior Krista Thorn before Rocha scored later in the inning on a wild pitch to make it a 3-0 contest.
