BLACKSBURG, Virginia – Sophomore Meredith Bozzi set a UNCW record in the 800 meters and Michaela Moran won the 5,000 meters as UNCW closed out its indoor season with an impressive performance at the Virginia Tech Invitational on Saturday at Rector Fieldhouse.

“We always conclude our indoor season at Virginia tech with some strong performances,” said UNCW Head Coach Jim Sprecher. “This year was unlike any other. Meredith (Bozzi) was able to double back a day later after the 600m and set another school record in the 800m. She probably was the MVP of the weekend for us.”

Bozzi posted a fifth-place time of 2:14.81 in the race, surpassing the previous record of 2:15.50, set by Bayley Bulkeley in 2003, also at the Virginia Tech Invitational.

“The race felt good, hard, but good!” said Bozzi following the race. “I was racing against fast girls and I think it really helped. I ran hard, when I was finishing the race I had nothing left in me! My legs were done.”

Moran, a freshman, won the 5,000 meters with a time of 18:10.75, ranking her sixth all-time on UNCW’s records list.

In the men’s 5,000, Will Bunch clocked in at 15:36.75 to finish second and is now ninth on UNCW’s all-time list.

In the Long Jump, senior Brent Campbell (23-9) and sophomore Nate Chronister (23-1.25) finished  second and third, respectively.

“There were some good efforts out there, especially from Brent Campbell in Long jump with a 23-9,” said Sprecher. “By far his best indoor jump and he just missed the record.”

UNCW’s men’s 4x400 relay edged Duke for second, while finishing behind South Carolina.

The Seahawks open their outdoor season on Mar. 2 with the Battle of the Beaches, hosted by Coastal Carolina.
