Release: 02/01/2013 WILMINGTON, North Carolina - The UNCW track program hits its indoor season midpoint this weekend when they head to Penn State for the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup on Saturday. The Seahawks will compete against a strong field that includes a total of 11 teams combined that are ranked in the USTFCCCA Northeast and Middle Atlantic regions. Cornell and host Penn State are the topped ranked programs in both men's and women's in the Northeast and Middle Atlantic regions, respectively. In their indoor opener, the Seahawks posted five first-place finishes at the Patriot Games. Leading the pack was junior sprinter Meena Reid, who broke her own school record in the 60 meters when she posted a time of 7.48 seconds in winning the event. In just her first outing, that time ranks just outside the top-50 nationally. Joining Reid with event wins were Clarissa Perkins (Shot Put), Cam Walton (Long Jump), Aerial Chatman (Triple Jump) and Kyle Barbour (Weight Throw). All five will compete again this weekend in the same events they won last weekend. This weekend's meet will be scored as a team. UNCW has finished as high as eighth twice on the men's side in three outings at the Challenge Cup while the women finished a best 11th overall in 2011. Justin Prevette owns UNCW's only win at the Cup, taking first-place honors in the Long Jump with a mark of 7.21 meters in 2009. The Seahawks continue their season with the Tiger Paw Invitational on Feb. 8-9, in Clemson, S.C. |
