WILMINGTON, North Carolina - Senior runner Wil Zahorodny of UNCW has been selected the Colonial Athletic Association's Men's Cross Country Scholar Athlete-of-the-Year.

The Damascus, Md., product was one of six student-athletes honored by the 12-team league for their work in the classroom. The conference honors a scholar-athlete in each of its 23 sports and the winners are selected by a vote of the sports information directors at each CAA institution. Nominees must be a starter or important reserve and have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.25.

Joining Zahorodny on the fall sports list were Stacey Nobles of James Madison in women's cross country, Kaela Barker of Northeastern in field hockey, Vincent Foermer of Georgia State in men's soccer, Mallory Schaffer of William & Mary in women's soccer and Vineece Verdun of Georgia State in volleyball. A scholar-athlete for CAA Football will be chosen in January.

A psychology major, Zahorodny is a Dean's List student and a six-time recipient of the CAA Commissioner's Academic Award in cross country and track and field. A member of the Honors Program at UNCW, he has made the Dean's List in six semesters and is a six-time winner of the Golden Seahawk Award.

Zahorodny has been the Seahawks' top performer in cross country the past three years. This season he was the individual champion at the Campbell Invitational and was the runner-up at the Seahawk Invitational. At the 2011 CAA Cross Country Championship, he placed 15th overall with a time of 25:57 over the 8K course.

"Wil exemplifies what it means to be a student-athlete," said assistant cross country/track and field coach Layne Schwier, who works primarily with the long distance runners. "He works hard to be the best in everything he does, but especially on the track and in the classroom.

"Wil is successful because he is self-motivated and loves a good challenge. He already has his name on multiple school records, but this accolade is extra special and most deserved."
