Zahorodny, Ester Top Entries At Regional

Release: 11/12/2011 LOUISVILLE, Kentucky - Seniors Wil Zahorodny and Lindsay Ester topped UNCW's runners as the Seahawks wrapped up the 2011-12 cross country season by competing in the NCAA Southeast Regional Saturday at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park. The Seahawks finished 27th out of 32 teams in the 10k men's race, while the women came in 30th out of 35 teams in the 6k women's competition. N.C. State, totaling 68 points, walloped Eastern Kentucky to capture the men's championship and Virginia edged UNC Chapel Hill to win the women's race with 107 points. The top two teams at each of the nine regionals automatically qualified for the NCAA Cross Country Championships on Nov. 21 in Terre Haute, Ind. Zahorodny, from Damascus, Md., covered the 10k layout in a time of 32:31.8 for 101st out of 218 runners. N.C. State's Ryan Hill was the men's champion with a 29:48.8 clip. Ester, meanwhile, clocked a 22:20.4 time on the 6k women's course for 99th place individually out of 240 entries. The Burlington, N.C., product raced for only the second time this season after recovering from an injury. UNC Chapel Hill's Kendra Schaaf won the women's race at 19:52.9.
